PASSERBY PULLED ONE MAN FROM BURNING TRUCK

Five people were killed in two separate crashes over the weekend on state Route 173 in northeastern Mercer County.

Blanche I. Bodesheim, 70, of 2101 Sandy Lake-Grove City Road, Jackson Center, was killed after a car driven by her husband, James L. Bodesheim, was hit by a pickup truck at 10 p.m. Saturday on state Route 173 and Millbrook Road in Worth Township, according to state police at Mercer.

On Sunday, a sport utility vehicle crossed the center line of Route 173 in Mill Creek Township and smashed head-on into a pickup truck, killing the SUV’s driver Laurel Urey, 34, of Stoneboro, her daughter Megan, 7, of Sandy Lake, and two of the pickup’s passengers Steven Ackerman, 39, and Michele Ackerman, 37, both of Meadville, state police said.

In Saturday’s wreck, a pickup, driven by Ronald Dean Sterrett of Grove City, was eastbound on Millbrook Road and failed to stop for a stop sign, police said. The pickup ran into the Bodesheim’s car, which was traveling north on Route 173, and both vehicles went off the road and into a farmer’s field. Sterrett’s pickup caught fire and a passing motorist pulled Sterrett to safety, police said.

Mrs. Bodesheim was pronounced dead at the scene of head and chest trauma by Mercer County Deputy Coroner Scott A. Black. Her husband was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, where he was listed in critical condition this morning.

Sterrett was in stable condition this morning at United Community Hospital, Pine Township, with a broken ankle, police said.

Sandy Lake and Jackson Center volunteer firefighters assisted police at the scene, police said. The wreck is still under investigation.

At 5:20 p.m. Sunday about 3 miles north of Sandy Lake Ms. Urey’s SUV crossed the centerline of Route 173 and crashed head-on into a pickup driven by David Martin of Meadville, police said.

Neither Ms. Urey nor her two children had a seat belt fastened, according to police. She and Megan were hurled through the windshield and died.

Ms. Urey, Megan and the Ackermans were pronounced dead at the scene by Black.

Ms. Urey’s son, Matthew Urey, 10, was in critical condition Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospital.

Martin was also in critical condition at the hospital. Martin’s wife Barbara was taken to United Community Hospital and later transferred to UPMC Presbyterian. A hospital administrator at UPMC Presbyterian said he had no information on her condition.

State Trooper Joseph Katavich said investigators had not determined what caused Ms. Urey to swerve suddenly. She had crossed over to the other lane and Katavich said there were no skid marks to indicate that either driver reacted by braking. He said the road was not wet or slick with oil. There were no witnesses to the crash, he said.

Police said the four people in the pickup truck were wearing seatbelts.

Sandy Lake volunteer firefighters and state police from Butler assisted at the scene, police said.
