Laskeys celebrate half-century by ‘moving on up’ to new digs

By Michael Roknick

Ask a Laskey these days what’s up and they’ll tell you moving is on their minds.

Laskey’s Discount Furniture & Carpeting at 57 Sharpsville Ave. in Sharon is moving to Goldstein Furniture Co.’s building at 37 North Water Ave., also in downtown Sharon. Goldstein is building a store on North Hermitage Road and expects to move out of Sharon to the new store later this year.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Laskey’s is owned by three brothers: Steve, Jay and Gary Laskey.

The move will allow for larger inventory, better parking and more floor space accessible to customers, said Gary Laskey.

"Right now we have three floors which makes it harder for our older customers to get around,’’ Laskey said. "The move will allow us to put everything on the same floor.’’

Also, the new store has air conditioning which is lacking in Laskey’s current building.

Employing 14, Laskey said he expects to complete the move by Nov. 1. The store is looking to hire a number of Sharon High School football team members to help in the move, he added.

While the current store will be offered for sale, if it isn’t sold the business may use it to offer carpet remnants and more warehouse space. Laskey’s will continue to operate its existing warehouse on Broadway in Farrell.

Laskey’s carries Broyhill, Basset, England and Schweiger furniture lines and King Koil bedding and Aladdin Carpets.

The company was created by the Laskey brothers late father, Hersh who started out with $2,000 worth of inventory at a store on the corner of Silver Street and Vine Avenue in downtown Sharon, the current location of the Sharon Post Office. Their mother, Peggy, is retired.
