WORTH, MILL CREEK TOWNSHIPS

3 survivors upgraded, 2 still critical

Conditions have improved for three survivors of a pair of deadly crashes last weekend on state Route 173 in northeastern Mercer County.

Meadville resident David Martin was transferred out of St. Elizabeth’s Health Center in Youngstown on Wednesday, a hospital spokesman said. He did not know where Martin was transferred to.

Martin’s wife, Barbara, remained in critical condition at UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh, this morning.

Martin was driving a pickup truck that was hit head-on by a sport utility vehicle on Sunday about three miles north of Sandy Lake in Mill Creek Township, state police said.

The driver of the SUV, Laurel Urey, 34, of Stoneboro; her daughter Megan, 7, of Sandy Lake; and two of the pickup’s passengers, Steven Ackerman, 39, and Michele Ackerman, 37, both of Meadville, were killed, police said.

Ms. Urey’s son, Matthew, 10, was listed in serious condition this morning at St. E’s. He was in critical condition on Wednesday.

One of the survivors from another fatal accident on Saturday on state Route 173 was released from the hospital.

Ronald Dean Sterrett of Grove City was discharged from United Community Hospital on Wednesday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Sterrett was driving a pickup truck eastbound on Millbrook Road in Worth Township and hit a car driven by James L. Bodesheim, 2101 Sandy Lake-Grove City Road, after failing to stop for a stop sign, police said.

Bodesheim remained in critical condition this morning at UPMC Presbyterian. His wife, Blanche, 70, was pronounced dead at the scene.
