SHENANGO TOWNSHIP

New Castle woman seriously hurt in freak crash

A New Castle woman who was thrown from her car in an accident Monday morning in Shenango Township was seriously injured, police said.

But there was some confusion this morning as to which hospital Betty J. Butera, 32, was taken. Chief Ronald Preston said she was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, but a hospital spokeswoman said this morning she was not there.

Preston said she was admitted to the intensive care unit Monday.

Ms. Butera was northbound on state Route 60 at 9:22 a.m. when her car went off the right side of the road while passing the Route 18 exit ramp, police said.

The car went along the northbound lane, behind the guardrail, for about 550 feet before catapulting off an embankment and falling about 25 feet to Route 18, police said. Ms. Butera was thrown.

Route 18 was shut down for about 55 minutes and a helicopter landed on the roadway to take her to the hospital, police said.

Shenango Township Volunteer Fire Department, Southwest Mercer County Regional police and Mercer County Sheriff’s Department assisted.
