MEADVILLE

Man sentenced in death of pedestrian

The Associated Press

A man must spend up to 10 years in prison for a fatal accident that he left without reporting last year, a judge said.

Shawn Davenport, 29, of Spartansburg was sentenced Monday by Crawford County Judge Anthony Vardaro, who said he had no criminal record but a "horrible driving record."

Davenport was convicted in May of charges including causing an accident that resulted in a death, failing to report the accident and driving with a suspended license. The low range of his sentence could be 21 months.

Davenport’s car hit Louis Ross, 21, and another man last Sept. 26 late at night on a rural road. Ross was knocked 60 yards into a ditch, and the other man, Mark Cook, had minor injuries. Davenport’s license had been suspended for speeding.

Defense attorney Edward Hatheway said the men were wearing dark clothing and walking with their backs to traffic in the dark. Ross’ relatives said Ross had served two years for theft -- potentially more than Davenport could serve in the death.
