Picnic toasts county’s birthday

Mercer County is set to celebrate its bicentennial with upcoming community events.

A picnic will be noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 26 at Grove City Memorial Park, off state Route 58.

Catered by Steese’s Restaurant, it will include hot dogs, macaroni salad, rigatoni, hamburgers and cole slaw. Dean Dairy and McDonald’s in Grove City will provide beverages and Mercer County Dairy Princess Committee will provide ice cream.

There will be face painting and balloon animals for children.

Cost is $2 per person.

Western Pennsylvania Civil War Re-enactors Society will hold an encampment on Aug. 26 and 27.

The camp will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 26; and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 26.

Civil War artillery demonstrations by the 12th Pennsylvania Reserve Artillery will be 11 a.m. and every hour from 1-4 p.m. Aug. 26.

Spectators can participate in Civil War army drills and marching at 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Aug. 26 as part of recruiting for the citizen army.

The following events are scheduled for Aug. 26:

10:30 a.m. -- New recruits advance to the front line.

11:30 a.m. -- Re-enactors’ lunch.

12:30 p.m. -- Living History Civil War period dance demonstration.

1:30 p.m. -- Infantry drill and arms inspection.

2:30 p.m. -- Civil War infantry skirmish demonstration.

The following events are scheduled for Aug. 27:

10 a.m. Civil War infantry drill and tactics.

11 a.m. -- Lecture on Civil War weapons and equipment.

Noon -- Lunch.

1 p.m. -- Lecture on Civil War civilian ladies’ clothes.

Reservations are being taken for Mercer County Bicentennial Cookbook. Cost is $7.
