JAMESTOWN

Council plans overhaul of town’s water system

Jamestown council recently voted to borrow $170,000 to fund engineering and design of replacement of the town’s 30-year-old water system.

The borough will borrow the engineering costs from National City Bank at 6.21 percent interest. It was lowest of five bids.

Hickory Engineering, Hermitage, will design the estimated $4.2 million overhaul, which will include a new water-treatment plant, new storage tank and total line replacement. Borough residents have been plagued by odors and discolored drinking water.

Although grants and loans are being sought, the project is expected to result in a water-rate increase.
