St. Joe's lists 'Respect Life' plans
October is Respect Life Month in the Catholic Church in the United States. St. Joseph Church, 79 Case Ave., plans to celebrate the sacredness of human life and focus on issues related to and threatening human life.
Members of the parish's Pro-Life Committee will distribute red lapel roses this weekend at the church's entrances during all Masses. Wearing the rose signifies unconditional love and respect for all human life, born and unborn.
Parishioners will be given an opportunity to spiritually adopt an unborn child who is unknown to them but threatened by abortion. Prayer cards with the daily spiritual adoption prayer will be distributed this weekend at all Masses.
The parish bulletin this weekend will have insert brochures published by the U.S. Catholic Conference. Posters also will be displayed throughout the parish buildings. "Every Human Life is a sign of God's love, a trace of His glory" is theme of the posters and brochures.
The theme also will be used in a poster contest for students of the parish being conducted during October. Winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the March for Life on Jan. 22 in Washington, D.C.
A Rosary will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday in the Mother's Chapel. The Rosary, for Respect Life intentions, will be at 4 p.m. each Sunday in the chapel. A prayer vigil will be held Oct. 29 along with the Rosary.
Thirty-eight white crosses will be displayed throughout the month on the church lawn. They symbolize the 38 million babies who lost their lives to abortion since the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the U.S. A banner also will be displayed to explain the crosses' meaning.
A red rose banner with the words "Respect Life" will be displayed throughout the month in the church's sanctuary.
Sister Mary Hermann of Erie will speak about capital punishment Oct. 21-22 during all Masses. The parish already has gathered signatures for Moratorium 2000 against the death penalty. They are being forwarded to government officials.
A membership campaign for the parish Pro-Life committee is being conducted.
The public is invited to attend all events.
