LAKEVIEW

Towns pursue water grant

The neighboring towns of Sandy Lake and Stoneboro are continuing to explore the possibility of securing a Community Development Block Grant to fund a joint water project.

According to Sandy Lake Councilman, Curtis Kerns, speaking for the water committee, Sandy Lake will do a random income survey for this one project to see if they qualify. Kerns stated that, in the future, they hope to be able to utilize census data for any future projects.

Under the proposed project, Stoneboro would extend water lines to Lakeview High School and tie in with Sandy Lake's system to provide an additional water supply for the school district. In addition, the joint venture would allow cooperative sharing of resources for each community in case of a water emergency.

The borough received a letter from Dennis Puko, Mercer County, after Sandy Lake, Stoneboro, and Mercer County officials met to discuss the water project. Kerns reported that the income survey was required and that both communities would need to participate in order to be considered for a block grant to pay for the project. If the communities are able to secure the grant, it would be administered through the county.

Council approved sending Maintenance Supervisor, David Umstead, to a meeting of the American Water Association at a cost of $25. The meeting will be Oct. 27, at the Holiday Inn, Hermitage.

The borough will also rejoin the Rural Water Association. According to Borough Secretary, Mary E. Moore, last year's dues of $400 was split between the sewer and water funds.
