MERCER COUNTY

English cancels debate, LWV says

The Mercer County debate between congressional rivals U.S. Rep. Phil English and Marc Flitter has been canceled, the League of Women Voters of Mercer County said Friday.

The League said the county debate, which was scheduled for Tuesday night, will not be re-scheduled.

English’s campaign canceled, the League said. English, an Erie Republican seeking his fourth term, told the League he would be unable to attend because of congressional business. Congress is currently on budget bills that have been put off until the final days of the election.

It is the second time English’s campaign has canceled the county debate. The first cancellation also was linked to congressional business.

English has not debated in Mercer County since 1996.
