Mrs. Pacsi took cash over 10 years

Odette Pacsi, a former manager at National City Bank’s Farrell branch office, pleaded guilty this morning to stealing more than $500,000 from the branch over 10 years.

The U.S. Attorney General’s Office in Pittsburgh said that Mrs. Pacsi, 44, of 33 Judy Lynn Drive, Farrell, pleaded guilty to one count of bank embezzlement for taking $589,000 from the branch from 1990 to July 2000. The theft was discovered in August. The Attorney General’s Office did not say how the theft was discovered.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert S. Cessar told U.S. District Court Judge Donetta Ambrose that on a regular basis Mrs. Pacsi took cash from teller drawers or the bank vault in amounts ranging from $20 to a couple hundred dollars. In order to cover the amounts she had taken, she falsely balanced bank records for the teller drawers and the vault, he said.

Mrs. Pacsi faces a maximum 30 years in jail and a $1 million fine. A sentencing hearing is set for 2 p.m. Feb. 2.

She is the wife of Gene Pacsi, the former mayor of Farrell. Pacsi held that office from 1978 to January of this year.

Pacsi didn’t seek another term as mayor last year so he could run, ultimately unsuccessfully, for county commissioner. One of the county’s leading Democrats, Pacsi also ran unsuccessfully for county treasurer in 1993.

National City acknowledged in August that the FBI was investigating allegations of fraud at the branch located at Sharon-New Castle Road and Mercer Avenue.
