Community center proposal to get more discussion
The proposal to build a new community center at Steel City Terrace, Farrell, raised some concerns from Southwest Gardens Economic Development Corp., Farrell, and city council, and the issue remains unresolved.
Dr. Kimberley Richards, executive director of Southwest Gardens, questioned building a new center when her center and Prince of Peace Center are nearby.
She said there might be too much community center space in one area of town, especially if the authority plans to use it for the purposes already covered by Southwest Gardens and Prince of Peace.
Authority Executive Director L. DeWitt Boosel said no services will be duplicated, and the Steel City Terrace Resident Counsel will be involved in running the center.
Since then, some other proposals have surfaced.
Dr. Richards said there has been discussion about using federal grant money from the authority to add on to Southwest Gardens, and building a center in another part of town.
She said a meeting is supposed to be scheduled with the authority and developer Ralph Falbo some time this week.
"I definitely think there are still some things to be worked out," she said. "Both the location and the services are a concern."
Should the authority decide to build a new center where it was originally planned, it would likely have to ask the Farrell Zoning Hearing Board for approval.
Frank Gargiulo, Hope 6 coordinator, said the center would not be built until the second construction phase, which would start in late 2002 at the earliest.
