Today's obituaries Michael S. Bercik Former Marine sergeant coached youth baseball Michael S. Bercik, 6881 Stewart-Sharon Road, Brookfield, died at 6:55 p.m. Friday (12-15-00) in the hospital of St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, Youngstown, after an extended illness. He was 65. Mr. Bercik was born Aug. 7, 1935, in Avella, Pa., to Stephen and Elizabeth Dudich Bercik. He attended Avella High School. A sergeant in the Marine Corps during the Korean conflict, Mr. Bercik received military honors including the National Defense, Korean and United Nations Service Medals. He retired after working 19 years at the former National Castings Division of Midland-Ross Corp., Sharon, as a mill worker. Mr. Bercik had also worked for 15 years as an inspector and guard for Ohio Security Systems, Warren, Ohio. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Hermitage. Mr. Bercik coached championship teams for the Brookfield Little League and Pony League and received the Sportsmanship Award in the 1971 Hoyle Tournament. A sports enthusiast, he played on various area softball teams. Mr. Bercik was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vienna, Ohio. He enjoyed polka music. Surviving are: his wife, the former Georgiana M. Sereday, whom he married June 29, 1960; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Tracy L.) Tice, Brookfield and Mrs. John (Jill M.) Zinger, Hubbard; a son, Mark G., Brookfield; three sisters, Mrs. Stanley (Sue) Lapinski, Beaver Falls, Pa.; Mrs. Mike (Mary) Hayden, Industry, Pa.; and Mrs. Richard (Elizabeth) Hobart, Masury; a brother, John Bercik, Niceville, Fla.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Blazak, and a brother, Steve Bercik.
BERCIK Lt. Col. George Vernon Carroll Retired Air Force officer was WWII veteran, businessman Retired Lt. Col. George Vernon Carroll, 29 Carroll Road, Sandy Creek Township, died at 3 a.m. Saturday (12-16-00) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 88. Mr. Carroll was born June 17, 1912, in Parkers Landing, Armstrong County, Pa., to Augustus W. and Laura Mae French Carroll. He graduated from Kenmore High School, Akron, in 1930. He enlisted in the Army in 1936 and served in the Field Artillery, Signal Corps and Army Air Corps before transferring to the Air Force in 1947. Mr. Carroll was a World War II veteran and served in the Caribbean and Asian-Pacific theaters of operation. He retired from the military in 1956 after 20 years of service. After his retirement, he worked for the National Security Agency, Westinghouse Electric Corp.'s Sharon Transformer Division, and the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. He also started the Twin Kiss drive-in restaurant, Sheakleyville. He was a member and past president of Commodore Perry Lions Club, Hadley, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Cpl. James O. Jordan Post 3374, Greenville. Surviving are: his wife, the former Evelyn Marie Harm, whom he married May 2, 1942; two daughters, Mrs. Newton (Patricia Gay) Reash, Hadley, and Mrs. Thomas (Margaret Suzanne) Billett, Grantville, Pa.; a son, Noel G., Greenville; two granddaughters and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary I. Friday, Laura McPherson, Lenora M. Knox, and Margaret E. Hawes, and two brothers, Roy C. Milson and Norman A. Carroll. CARROLL Dennis Roland Garwood WWII Navy veteran was retired state employee COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Dennis Roland Garwood, formerly of Linesville, died Friday (12-15-00) in his home. He was 77. Mr. Garwood was born in Linesville to Arthur and Laura Dennis Garwood. A World War II Navy veteran, he served in the Sea Bees. Mr. Garwood was for many years an employee of the Ohio Department of Transportation. He retired in 1983 as deputy director of highway safety. Mr. Garwood was a former member of Linesville United Methodist Church. He was also a former member of Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 603, Grove City. Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Scott (Marji) Hyden, Pataskala, Ohio, and Mrs. Jack (Traci) Plants, South Point, Ohio; two sisters, June Barron, Grove City and Mary Frances Ewing, Linesville; a brother, Richard Garwood, Colorado; and seven grandchildren. Besides his wife, Margaret, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lori Gum; a sister, Wilda Roxberry; and a brother, Wendell Garwood. GARWOOD Kathryn Lynch Mercer woman was member of St. Blaise Parish, Midland A service was held Friday (12-15-00) for Kathryn Lynch, Mercer, formerly of Midland, Pa. She died Wednesday (12-13-00) evening in the hospital of Jameson Health System, New Castle. She was 83. Miss Lynch was born March 2, 1917, in Lopez, Pa. to Francis and Lizzie Walsh Lynch. She was a member of St. Blaise Parish, Midland.
Evelyn R. Marstellar Sharpsville homemaker, mother of 6, loved gardening Evelyn R. Marstellar, 2204 Eagle Place, Sharpsville, died at 12:25 a.m. Saturday (12-16-00) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System, after a brief illness. She was 63. Mrs. Marstellar was born May 31, 1937, in Dunns, W.Va., to Samuel and Beryl Waldron Meadows. A homemaker, she loved to bake and garden. She was Catholic. Her husband, Harold R. "Scotty" Marstellar, whom she married Nov. 28, 1968, died Dec. 5, 1992. Surviving are: five daughters, Mrs. Marion (Patti) Dantzler, McKinney, Texas; Mrs. Timothy (Anne) Hametz, Edinboro; Lisa Zagger, Houston, Texas; Mary Jo Madden, Wallington, N.J.; and Bobbi Marstellar, Chicago, Ill.; a son, Michael Zagger, Pittsburgh; a brother, Joseph Meadows, Lawrence, Ga.; and six grandchildren. MARSTELLAR Kenneth A. Wilson Pharmacist, Sharon native, was Univ. of Pittsburgh grad BOARDMAN, Ohio -- Kenneth A. Wilson, 432 Gardenwood Drive, formerly of Sharon, died Saturday morning in his home after a brief illness with cancer. He was 54. Mr. Wilson was born March 20, 1946, in Sharon, to Elmer E. and Ruby Genevieve Cox Wilson. A 1964 alumnus of Sharon High School, he graduated in 1970 from the University of Pittsburgh's College of Pharmacy. A pharmacist in the Youngstown area for over 25 years, Mr. Wilson most recently worked for Rite Aid Pharmacies. A member of St. Charles Church, Boardman, he was a charter member and current vice president of the men's club where he had been its man of the year in 1995. Mr. Wilson was past president of the Eastern Ohio Pharmacists Association and had served as a trustee for District 14. He was named the association's Outstanding Pharmacist in 1996. He also served on the association's Public Relations, Professional Relations, Awards and Finance committees. Mr. Wilson was also a member of the Warren table tennis club. Surviving are: his wife, the former Rosemarie A. Mazerik, whom he married May 8, 1982; a daughter, Darla M. Wilson, at home; two sons, Troy D., Pittsburgh and Mark A., at home; a sister, Faye Annette Atchison, Lewisberry, Pa; and relatives in Mercer County. WILSON |
