Displays warm cold winter nights
The holiday season brightens the darkest time of the year with parties and gifts to warm the heart and twinkling lights to cheer the soul.
Holiday glimmer doesn't stop at the Christmas tree. In some families, decorating the outside of the house with strings of lights is as much a tradition as putting out cookies and milk for Santa.
Again this year, The Herald is taking its readers on a tour of local homes, where folks beckon Santa and other passersby to stop and take a look.
Here's a sampling of this year's twinkling treasures:
Brookfield/Masury
- 1063 Charles St. -- Home decorated with lovely light display.
- Route 82 and Warner Road -- Caller said many homes in Brookfield Acres Mobile Home Park are decorated for Christmas.
- 6899 Sharon Stewart Road -- A big Nativity scene, metal sleigh with reindeer, snowmen, and lighted semi sit outside this Brookfield home.
- Sharon Stewart Road to Bedford Road -- Many homes are decorated with icicle lights and displays.
- The 700 block of Bedford Road -- Several homes are outlined with red, green and white lights, plus several homes have holiday displays.
- 7390-7416 Addison Road -- More than 33,000 twinkling lights decorate three homes and barns; displays feature carolers, Santa and his sleigh, a horse and carriage, penguins and igloos and holiday messages. Santa arrives between 6 and 9 p.m. Dec. 22 with candy canes for kids and hot chocolate for all.
- Golf Drive -- Several homes are outlined in icicle lights. Featured are snowmen, a Santa, a sleigh filled with presents, and Rudolph.
- 8056 Ulp St. -- Multi-colored lights adorn the houses and pine trees.
- 500 to 700 blocks of Brookfield Avenue -- Several homes are bedecked with glistening lights.
- Grover Street -- Many homes are decorated with twinkling lights. Christmas displays overlook the Shenango Valley and lights from the valley twinkle back.
- Wildwood Drive -- Various homes are decorated nicely for the holidays.
- Lincoln Street -- Several homes are lighted for the holidays.
- Boyd Street -- Homes are glowing with lights galore.
- 7500 block of Warren-Sharon Road -- Several bright displays adorn the neighborhood.
- Valley View Drive -- White, icicle and multi-colored lights make homes bright in this area.
- Charles/Service streets area -- Several homes are decorated with lights and displays.
- 807 Ulp St. -- Icicle lights decorate the whole house. Christmas trees, a Santa, reindeer and toy soldiers adorn the lawn, and arches of white lights line the driveway.
Clark
- Tara, a country inn, has had its elaborate display of white lights turned on since before Thanksgiving.
Farrell
- 1816 Memorial Drive -- Five to six Christmas trees are decorated in the front and back and all the bushes are lighted. The display also features two reindeer.
- 2017 Paul St. -- Caller said, "You can't help noticing it" with lights and decorations.
Greenville area
- 340 Wasser Bridge Road -- The elaborate display by Franklin and Audrey Kiser in Hempfield Township includes 140,000 lights, a life-size manger scene, a Santa's workshop and more than 10 animated scenes. The lights are visible from Route 18. Hours are 5 to 10:30 p.m. weekdays and 5 to 11 p.m. weekends. Santa visits from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
- 149 College Ave. -- Beautifully decorated. Many other houses on the street are decorated too.
- Columbia Avenue -- Several homes along the street are decorated, making this a festive drive between Main and Mercer streets.
- 361 Leech Road -- Caller said it's nicely decorated, with a 10-foot poinsettia, a Nativity scene and a Santa's workshop, all done in colored lights.
- 624 River Road -- House, fence and yard are lighted.
- 9 Penn Ave. -- Residents of Greenville House have decorated their balconies to make the building sparkle with Christmas spirit.
Grove City area
- Irishtown Road, north of Route 58, in Pine Township -- From Grove City, take Route 58 about 6 miles from town and turn left at the Chevy garage. Go about 6/10ths of a mile. House outlined with icicle lights, Santa and Rudolph in yard. Trees covered in lights. About 4,000 lights in all.
- Irishtown Road, south of Route 58, in Pine Township -- About a mile from Route 58 house all outlined in lights. "Just a lot of pretty lights," caller said.
- 26 George Junior Road -- House is decorated with lights and wreaths.
- Greg Street -- Many houses decorated for Christmas.
Hermitage
- 156 Sunset Blvd. -- Multi-colored lights hang on all sides of the home. A Nativity scene and snowmen decorate the lawn. Other homes on Sunset and nearby Donald Road are also illuminated for the season.
- Butterfly Lane -- About 25 to 30 homes are draped in lights.
- North Buhl Farm Drive, especially the 500, 700, 800, 1000, 1100 and 2000 blocks -- Wreaths hang in the windows, the shrubs are decked out in multi-colored lights and seasonal figures decorate the lawns.
- 1051 Maple Drive -- Display includes a candy cane-lined driveway and illuminated Nativity, snowmen and reindeer.
- Nugent Convalescent Home, 500 Clarksville Road -- The yard is decorated with thousands of lights.
- Hofius Lane and Clarksville Road -- Neighborhood yards are a forest of free-form green, red and white trees made with lights.
- 1590 S. Keel Ridge Road -- Display features multi-colored lights, a Nativity scene and decorated trees. 2000 and The 2100 block of South Keel Ridge also is decorated.
- 975 Robertson Road -- Light display and tree-lined driveway were described as impressive.
- Lamor Road, east of Robertson Road -- An angel and a tree light both sides of a house.
- 427 Herr St. -- Two city lots next to Patagonia Little League Field are decorated with more than 10,000 lights. The house and garage are decorated with lights. Twelve soldiers, a Nativity scene, Santa and Mrs. Claus, Christmas trees, Christmas bears, snowmen, reindeer and angels complete the scene, which took more than a month to construct.
- Buhl Woods, off South Buhl Farm Drive -- A two story white brick house with a fountain in front in the last cul-de-sac is decorated with lights, a reindeer and sleigh, snowmen, angels and carolers. The trees are also lighted.
- 1385 Skyline Drive -- Icicle lights decorate the house and homemade trees are in the front yard with a Nativity scene. Wreaths and lights decorate the property, along with a display of a snowman and the North Pole.
- 1280 Dutch Lane -- House is decorated nicely.
- McConnell Road, Westminster and Audubon drives -- The neighborhood will be illuminated with luminaries from 3 p.m. to midnight Dec. 24.
- Monticello Avenue -- Street is beautifully decorated.
- South Neshannock Road -- Caller said many homes are festively decorated.
Mercer area
- 7992 W. Market St. -- 3,000 lights and yard ornaments decorate the outside of the house.
- 1095 Perry Highway -- Caller said house is festooned with lights, decorated Christmas trees and a Santa and reindeer.
- 1099 Perry Highway -- Caller said the house has lights lining the fence and outlining the house. Two houses nearby glisten with colored, white and blue lights.
- 7391 Sharon-Mercer Road -- Lights around the house and garage make this house glow. Passersby can see a decorated Christmas tree inside the house.
- 1273 Bend Road -- Caller said the house is "amazing to see." Many lights, lighted arches over the driveway and displays with snowmen illuminate the property.
Pymatuning Township
- 533 and 549 Crestview Drive -- Houses are decorated with lights, a Nativity scene and a Santa and sleigh scene.
Sandy Lake
- Paxton Road is "very pretty to travel on," caller said. Trees are decked with lights and the yards are decorated with gingerbread villages and Nativity scenes.
Sharon
- 1166 Buhl Circle -- The house has a fountain and many beautiful lights.
- 1086 Baldwin Ave. -- House has many lights and a sleigh with reindeer on the roof.
- 197 Cedar Ave. -- Many, many lights and displays with reindeer and Santa and elves climbing a ladder to the roof decorate the house.
- 434 Prindle St. -- Lighted poinsettias, icicle lights and a Santa Claus decorate the house.
- 302 Wilson St. -- The whole house is decorated. There is a star on the roof, a fence made out of lights, crosses and decorated trees in the yard.
- 725 and the 800 blocks of Spencer Avenue -- Homes are decorated with lights and displays for Christmas.
- 557 Tamplin St. -- House is decorated in blue lights. Many other houses on the street are decorated.
- 900 block of Tamplin -- Many homes are decorated with lights and Christmas displays.
- 150 French St. -- Lights, a Nativity scene and moving reindeer adorn the lawn.
- 1043 March St. -- Lights, snowmen and reindeer decorate the lawn for the holiday season.
- 689 McClure Ave. -- Nice lights on the house.
- 400 block of McClure Ave. -- Many houses on the block have beautiful lights and nice displays and decorations.
- 572 Hawthorne St. -- Cute house with lights and wreaths.
- 383 and 293 Sherman Ave. -- Homes have many lights.
- 326 and 382 Baldwin Ave. -- A plethora of lights make these homes bright for the Christmas season.
- 600 block of Budd Street -- Houses have nice lights, wreaths and decorations.
- 600 and 700 blocks of Cedar Avenue -- Houses have many, many lights with various displays.
- 319 and 377 Cedar Ave. -- A Nativity scene, lights and wreaths decorate the houses. Other houses on the block also are decorated.
- 400 block of South Oakland Avenue -- Many houses are festooned with lights and decorations.
- 1069 Pearl St. -- An array of colored lights nicely decorates this home. There are candy canes, stars, a Santa Claus and other scenes on the lawn.
- 922 Pearl St. -- Blue lights and blue icicle lights make this house look like "a blue ice castle," according to an e-mail.
- 200 block of Meyer Avenue -- Houses are nicely decorated with lights.
- 200 block of Case Avenue -- Homes are decorated with lights and wreaths.
- 755 Fisher Hill St. -- Home has many multicolored lights and the lawn is filled with lighted decorations.
- 400 block of Fisher Hill -- Many homes festively decorated.
- Fabian Way -- Homes are decorated with lights and displays.
- 585 Ellsworth St. -- House is nicely decorated for the holidays.
- 118 S. Irvine Ave. -- Home is decorated with lights. Many other houses on block also decorated.
- 900 block of Hadley Road -- Many houses are decorated with multicolored lights and displays.
- 1149 George St. Ext. -- Trees, rocking horses, Santa Claus and lots of lights make up display.
Sharpsville
- 312 Main St. -- 2,000 lights adorn the house.
- 110 Hazen Road -- House is decorated for Christmas with lights.
- 439 S. Fourth St. -- Santa Claus' sleigh is pulled by three little pigs.
- High Street -- Many houses on this street are festooned with multicolored lights.
- 247 W. High St. -- The house is illuminated with white lights and two reindeer graze in the yard.
- 607 Ridge Ave. -- Red and white lights bedeck this house. Lighted red wreaths hang in the windows and a small Christmas tree sparkling with red and white lights stands on the porch.
- 918 Ridge Ave. -- The house is outlined in white lights, and wreaths with red bows hang in the windows.
- Mayfield Road -- Almost every house on this street is nicely decorated.
- 1836 Hall Ave. -- House is trimmed in lights and a snowman stands atop the roof. The garage, deck, trees, bushes and deer in the front yard are also covered with lights.
Shenango Township
- 71 Elliot Road -- Trees in the front and side yards are lighted with colored lights and the front and back of the house are covered with white icicle lights. Lights decorating the basketball hoop fade in and out.
- 33 Hogue Road -- House is lighted from the mailbox to the front porch to the swings to the chairs to the basketball hoop, caller said.
- 572 Bedford Road -- House is decorated with lights and garland. A tree shines with lighted stars.
- Bedford-West Middlesex Road from state Route 318 heading toward Pulaski has a 1.5-mile stretch with many houses decorated with lights, wreaths and other lawn displays.
South Pymatuning Township
- 4405 Thomason Road -- Three sides of this corner home are lighted with more than 3,000 lights, which cover the fence, deck and house. The front of the house is decked out with more than 90 feet of garland and lights. Red spotlights illuminate the house.
- 4785 Ivanhoe Road -- House is embellished with lights. Santa Claus with a sleigh, snowmen, a little drummer boy and trees complete the display.
- 3157 Kathy Lane -- Candy canes with lights line the driveway, white lights outline the house and lighted angels hang in the windows. Red ribbons also decorate the house.
- 2723 Hunter St. -- An array of multicolored lights, icicle lights, snowmen, candy canes, lighted trees and Santa make this house festive for the holiday.
- 1886 Poplar Way -- Oodles of lights make this house glow with the holiday spirit.
- 2929 Tamarack Drive -- The house shines with icicle lights while the trees glow with white lights.
- 1543 Drivere Lane -- The garage and house glisten with colored lights. The display also includes angels and Santa with his sleigh.
Transfer area
- 156 Hopper Road -- House is decorated with lights and a 100-year-old work wagon is decorated. There are free-standing Christmas trees on the lawn and lighted reindeer.
Wheatland
- 12 Chestnut St. -- House is decorated with white lights and wreaths with red bows.
