SHARON

Alleged repeat robber caught

An Oil City man is being held in Mercer County Jail for allegedly attempting several armed robberies in Ohio and western Pennsylvania.

James A. Tarleton Jr., 47, was arrested by Sharon police Wednesday following two attempted armed robberies in the city, police said.

Police said the incidents happened as follows:

At 2:59 p.m. there was an attempted robbery at Rite Aid, 811 E. State St. A man entered the store, motioned to his pocket as though he had a weapon and asked for money. He ran from the store before he got any money.

Police got a description of the man and began searching the area.

At 3:40 p.m. there was a second attempted robbery at Rite Aid, 60 S. Water Ave. The attempt happened in the same manner as the first.

Police arrived on the scene and got a description of the man and his car from a customer in the pharmacy.

Police found the 1999 white Pontiac in the Sharon City Center parking lot and chased it. The chase went from the parking lot to Water Avenue, State Street, Shenango Avenue, Pitt Street, Vine Street and finally to Reno Street, where police blocked the road and stopped Tarleton’s car.

Police said questioning of Tarleton revealed he is also responsible for attempted robberies in Oil City, Franklin and in Hubbard, Niles and Liberty Township, Ohio. Police said there may be more robberies added to the list.

Tarleton was to be arraigned this morning before District Justice James E. McMahon, Sharon.
