Family unhurt by afternoon fire; started near fireplace, chief says
Physician Troy Jones will have to replace his furniture, but his home was spared from a 3 p.m. fire on Wednesday.
The fire was believed to have started in the vicinity of the fireplace in Jones' 210 Fredonia Road home in Hempfield Township, said Fire Chief Roy Ritter.
A state fire marshal is expected to help firefighters pinpoint the cause, but Ritter said the fire was accidental.
Jones, his wife, and two children got out of the house unharmed, he said.
The house was so well insulated that the fire caused little damage, Ritter said. However, heat spread throughout the house and things melted rather than burned, he said.
All the furniture, everything in the kitchen and most of the clothing will need to be replaced, the fire chief said. Ritter did not have a monetary estimate of the losses.
Firefighters brought the fire under control in about an hour, he said. One firefighter, who was not identified, cut his hand in a broken window, Ritter said.
Assisting Hempfield Township firefighters were firefighters from Greenville, Sheakleyville, Fredonia, West Salem Township, Transfer and Jamestown.
