BROOKFIELD

Fifth wife surfaces in bigamy case

Records show Brookfield man married first in 1986

A man who was charged with bigamy Jan. 9 after being married four times but divorced only once, had a fifth wife, court records show.

Todd Jablon, 39, of Brookfield was married April 25, 1986, to Penny A. Newman, Salem, Ohio, by then-mayor of Salem Robert E. Sell, according to Columbiana County court records. Jablon was living in Sharpsville at the time.

There is no record of their divorce in Mercer or Lawrence counties in Pennsylvania or Trumbull, Mahoning or Columbiana counties in Ohio.

After his Columbiana County marriage, Jablon was married in June 1990 in New Castle to Cindy Sipe; that union ended in divorce Dec. 14, 1992, according to records.

Jablon then married Patricia Ann O’Neal of Mercer on May 18, 1993, in Trumbull County Eastern District Court in Brookfield, records say.

He married Lillian Paul Busco of Greenville on June 28, 1996, in New Castle.

Jablon’s latest marriage was to Beverly Perry of Brookfield on Feb. 2, 2000, before Mercer County Common Pleas Court Judge Michael J. Wherry.

Jablon’s license application stated he was married and divorced only once before his marriage to Ms. Perry, the judge said. Jablon gave Dec. 14, 1992, as his date of divorce.

According to Kathleen Kloos, Mercer County Clerk of Courts, there is no central registry for marriages in Pennsylvania.

"There is really no way to check if someone’s been married in another county," Wherry said. "This is the first case I’ve heard of in the 40 years I’ve been a judge or a lawyer here. Most people think that after one or two times, that’s enough."
