PINE TOWNSHIP

Police say son strangled mother, is in institution

A Pine Township woman was strangled by her son Monday morning, according to an autopsy report and police.

Susan LaRue Fleeger, 48, of 832 B S. Center St., was found dead in her trailer after her son Shane R. Sloan, 28, of the same address, surrendered to police around 11 a.m. Monday.

Sloan is in Warren State Hospital, North Warren, Pa., for a mental health evaluation.

Ms. Fleeger, who was a nursing assistant with the Visiting Nurses Association of Butler County, was supposed to be getting ready for work and Sloan was supposed to report to Mercer County Jail Monday morning to serve a 12-day sentence for harassing a Pine Township woman Oct. 12.

Shane’s grandmother, who lived next door, called the police when Sloan did not show up for a ride to the jail, and no one answered the trailer door the second time she approached, at about 8:15 a.m.

Forensic pathologist Dr. Carl Williams performed the autopsy Tuesday morning at Ellwood City Hospital.

After being arraigned on charges of criminal homicide and causing or risking a catastrophe, Sloan was briefly taken to Mercer County Jail where he was held without bail before being taken to the statie hospital.

His evaluation could take anywhere from five days to two months, a court official said.

Sloan, who is being represented by Mercer County Public Defenders Christopher St. John and Douglas Straub, was set to have a preliminary hearing Feb. 14, but it will be continued due to a conflict in District Justice Lawrence T. Silvis’ schedule.

No date has been set.
