BROOKFIELD, BUTLER COUNTY

Sharon man accused in scam

A Sharon man who allegedly scammed five people, some elderly, out of more than $27,000, has been arrested.

Michael W. Klingensmith, 35, of 1070 Pearl St., was arrested at 4:41 p.m. Monday at home on a fugitive from justice warrant, Sharon police said. Brookfield Township and state police in Butler each had warrants out for Klingensmith, police said.

Klingensmith stole a total of $6,170 from three people in Butler County by pretending to sell water softener systems, state police said. He failed to deliver any systems or provide any services, police said.

The first incident police said they were aware of occurred Dec. 21 at a home in Slippery Rock Township. There were also victims in Muddy Creek Township and Slippery Rock, police said, adding two of the victims were senior citizens. Klingensmith was also wanted by Brookfield Township police for using a water system and hot tub scam to con an elderly man out of $14,500 and another man out of $7,000, police said.

Klingensmith was arraigned before District Justice Clifford Woessner, Slippery Rock, on charges of deceptive or fraudulent business practices, 13 counts of securing execution of documents by deception, three counts of falsely impersonating persons privately employed and a count of theft by deception. He was taken to Butler County Jail after failing to post $50,000 bond.

Brookfield police said they are awaiting extradition of Klingensmith on similar charges.
