Enrichment classes are listed by Lifelong Learning Council

Sharon Lifelong Learning Council will sponsor winter and spring 2001 enrichment classes.

The following adult courses will be in Sharon High:

  • Organic gardening tips -- 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 1. Cost is $5.

  • Basic Bonsai -- 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 8. Cost is $5.

  • Composting: Building healthy soil -- 6 to 8 p.m. April 17. Cost is $5.

  • Financial workshop for individual investors -- 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 15 and 22 and March 1 and 8 in Room 120. Cost is $10. Information: 347-5001.

  • Adventure of retirement -- 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 13, 20 and 27 and March 6 in Room 120. Cost is $5.

  • Spanish I basic -- 6 to 7:15 p.m. Feb. 12, 20 and 26; and March 5, 12, 19 and 26 in Room 120. Cost is $25.

  • Spanish II basic -- 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. Feb. 12, 20 and 26; and March 5, 12, 19 and 26 in Room 120. Cost is $25.

  • Beginning guitar I -- 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21 and 28; March 7, 14, 21 and 28; and April 4 and 11 in the music room. Cost is $25.

  • Guitar level II -- 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. Feb. 21 and 28; March 7, 14, 21 and 28; and April 4 and 11 in the music room, for those 15 and older. Cost is $25.

  • Career-wise: Where do I go from here? -- 7 to 8:15 p.m. Feb. 21 and 28 and March 7 and 14 in Room 120. Cost is $15.

  • Basic tole painting -- 6 to 8:30 p.m. March 7, 14, 21 and 28 in Art Room 117. Cost is $30. Students should bring their own paint brushes.

    The following instruction and enrichment courses will be in Sharon High:

  • American Sign Language -- 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 15 and 22; and March 1, 8 and 15 in Room 120. Cost is $25.

  • Fly-tying for fun -- 6 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 20 and 27; and March 6 in Room 120. Cost is $15. The course is open to high school students at no charge with prior registration.

    The following children’s courses are set:

  • Children’s study of Asian, African and African-American cultures -- 3 to 5 p.m. Feb. 12 through 14 and 21 and 22 in the cafeteria of West Hill Elementary School, Sharon, for second- and third-graders.

  • Word skills for fun -- 2:45 to 4 p.m. Feb. 15 and 22; March 1, 8, 22 and 29; and April 5 and 19 in the library of Case Avenue Elementary School, Sharon, for second- and third-graders.

  • Games with learning in mind -- 2:45 to 4 p.m. March 14 and April 11 in Case Avenue Elementary’s library, for second- and third-graders.

  • Learn cartooning -- 2:45 p.m. Beginning Feb. 26 in Sharon High; and beginning April 23 in West Hill Elementary, for fifth- through 10th-graders.

    The following adult computer courses will be in Sharon High’s computer lab:

  • Microsoft Excel -- 6 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 12 through 15. Cost is $25.

  • Introduction to personal computers -- 6 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 27 and 28; and March 1. Cost is $20.

  • Introduction to Windows 95/98 -- 6 to 8:30 p.m. March 12 through 14. Cost is $20.

  • Microsoft Word I -- 9 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 17 and 24; and March 3 and 10. Cost is $25.

  • Introduction to the Internet -- 6 to 8:30 p.m. March 19 and 20. Cost is $25. Participants must have knowledge of Windows 95/98 and skills with a mouse.

  • Web page design -- 6 to 8:30 p.m. March 21 and 22. Cost is $10. Participants must have knowledge of Windows 95/98 and skills with a mouse.

  • Microsoft Word II -- 9 a.m. to noon March 17 and 24. Cost is $15. Participants must have knowledge of Windows 95/98 and Word and skills with a mouse.

  • Microsoft PowerPoint -- 6 to 8:30 p.m. April 2 through 5. Participants must have knowledge of Windows 95/98 and skills with a mouse. Cost is $25.

    The council’s Read and Discuss group meets at 7:30 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month in the Bennett ESC Building, 215 Forker Blvd., Sharon.

    The following books will be discussed:

  • March 13 -- "Headlong" by Mike Frayn.

  • March 27 -- "Possession" by A.S. Byatt.

  • April 10 -- "Undaunted Courage" by Stephen E. Ambrose.

  • April 24 -- "The Unconsoled" by Kazou Ishiguro.

  • May 8 -- "The Girl at the Lion D’Or" by Sebastian Faulks.

  • May 22 -- "Rules of the Wild" by Franceska Marciano.

    "Great Decisions" foreign policy discussion group meets at 4:30 p.m. Thursdays in Bennett ESC Building.

    The following topics will be discussed:

  • Thursday -- "China and Taiwan."

  • Feb. 15 -- "Missile Defense: A Cold-War Debate Continues."

  • Feb. 22 -- "Dealing with Iraq: Which Way Forward?"

  • March 15 -- "International Health Crisis."

  • March 22 -- "Mexico in Transition."

  • March 29 -- "European Integration."

  • April 5 -- "Conflict Resolution in Africa."

    Those who have not yet taken part in the group will receive a briefing book containing analyses, opinion ballots and a current world map. Cost is $15.

    Students who are seniors in high school and younger can take part in classes without charge.
