City man indicted for having child porn
A Sharon man is to be arraigned next month on charges of receipt and possession of child pornography.
John L. Searle, 60, of 280 Spruce Ave., is scheduled to be arraigned at 9:30 a.m. March 15 in federal court in Pittsburgh, according to a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Searle was indicted before a grand jury Thursday on the charges.
According to an indictment, Searle knowingly received and possessed child pornography that had been transported through the Internet from Aug. 27, 1999 until Oct. 11, 1999. Searle also knowingly possessed child pornography on Dec. 7, 1999, a news release said.
Sharon police and the Western Pennsylvania Crimes Against Children Task Force assisted with the investigation. The task force is made up of federal, state and local police, postal inspectors and hospitals in the region.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan, who presented the case to the grand jury, said the law provides a maximum total sentence of 25 years in prison, a fine of $750,000, or both.
