BUTLER COUNTY

Officials delay hearing for alleged scam artist

The preliminary hearing of a former Sharon man accused of scamming money from area elderly people has been continued.

Michael Klingensmith, 35, of Elderton, Pa., was to appear before District Justice Clifford J. Woessner, Slippery Rock, Tuesday on charges of fraudulent or deceptive business practices, securing execution of documents by deception, falsely impersonating persons privately employed and theft by deception.

A clerk at Woessner’s office said the hearing was continued for 30 days because state police in Butler County are trying to combine the charges with other charges brought against Klingensmith by the state Attorney General.

Klingensmith was charged by the Attorney General’s Office Monday with six counts of theft by deception, 11 counts of forgery and two counts each of deceptive or fraudulent business practices and theft by unlawful taking.

Klingensmith allegedly stole $513,000 from five people -- four of whom were elderly --through a water-filtration and hot-tub business scam. Police said he used the same scam in Butler County to steal about $23,000.

Brookfield police also have similar charges pending against Klingensmith.

Klingensmith was sent to Mercer County Jail after failing to post $513,000 bond.
