Hero essay winners named

Winners of Shenango Valley Urban League Guild’s African-American Heroes essay contest were honored Saturday during a luncheon in Sharpsville Middle School.

Winners and subjects are:

  • Musser Elementary School, Sharon -- Justin White, who wrote about Harriet Tubman; and Amie Lynn Messere, Rosa Parks.

  • Case Avenue Elementary School, Sharon -- Serina Miller, Sojourner Truth; and Jeffrey Gavin, Terrance Phillips.

  • West Hill Elementary School, Sharon -- Teasha Green, Ruby Bridges; and Stacia Madasz, Harriet Tubman.

  • Sharpsville Elementary School -- Kristen Prezioso, Rosa Parks.

  • Hermitage Elementary School -- Robert Pegues III, Michael Jordan.

  • West Middlesex Elementary School -- Jennifer Hornyak, Hillary Howard, a classmate who overcame a hearing impairment; Hillary Howard, Sojourner Truth; Garrett Atkinson, Martin Luther King Jr.; and Derek Smith, George Washington Carver.

  • Farrell Elementary School -- Anthony Oatis, Shabren Harvey; Norman Blue, Grandpa Bob; Jesse K. Hadden, Coretta Scott King; Shaun Jones, Rubin "Hurricane" Carter; and Lia Diana Hubbard, Muhammed Ali.

  • Mercer Elementary School -- Ryan Redmond, Walter Payton; Nicholas Baker, Colin Powell; and Lisa Eakin, Marion Jones.

  • Monsignor Geno J. Monti School, Farrell -- Brittany Buhovecky, Martin Luther King Jr.; and Jasmyn Moyer, James Ambrose Robinson.

    The essays were submitted by first- through sixth-grade students and were judged on originality, clarity, creativity and content.

    Elizabeth S. Lampkins, project and WIC director for Health and Welfare Department, was mistress of ceremonies.

    The Rev. Willie Peagler gave the invocation. Patricia Fisher and Deanna M.R. Yarboro led the presentation of awards. The winners also read their essays.

    Sheila Hamilton, parts distribution technician for General Motors Inc., was speaker. James A. Long, Urban League president and chief executive officer; Mrs. Yarboro and Mrs. Fisher also spoke.
