Flames contained to unattached garage

Friend tried to douse fire with hose

It’s uncertain what caused a Friday afternon fire in an unattached garage at 602 Edgewood Road in Sharon, but firefighters kept the flames from spreading to the house and left the scene about an hour after they arrived.

Firefighters did not give a damage estimate Friday evening, but said nothing valuable was inside the garage.

Tomi Fekech -- who lives at the home with her grandmother, Eleanor Garity -- was inside when the fire started. Ms. Fekech said she smelled smoke, but thought it was coming from a neighbor’s property.

Outside, Ms. Fekech’s friend Travis Ferguson spotted the fire shortly after it started. Ferguson, who said the garage went up quickly, tried to put out the fire with a garden hose before firefighters arrived. Ferguson was unsuccessful.

"I’m so glad it didn’t hit the house," he said.

Firefighters said the blaze started in a pile of rags and debris in a corner of the garage.
