Bishop Kim leads W. Pa. Conference

Bishop Hae-Jong Kim, the first Korean-American elected bishop in the United Methodist Church, will preach at 10:45 a.m. April 1 in First United Methodist Church, 73 Clinton St.

Bishop Kim specializes in evangelism, inter-cultural sensitivity, preaching, teaching and new church development.

In addition to his responsibilities as episcopal leader in the Western Pennsylvania Conference, Bishop Kim views himself as a "cultural bridge-builder" in the church and community. He serves on the General Board of Discipleship, chairs the Task Force to study Korean Ministry as designated by the 1996 General Conference, presides over the Northeastern Jurisdiction Korean Mission and serves on the Multi-Ethnic Center Board.

Instrumental in founding the Eastern Seaboard Korean Mission, Bishop Kim serves as a director for the General Board of Global Ministries and General Board of Discipleship and was the first Korean-American District Superintendent in the United Methodist Church.

Born in 1935 in Seoul, Korea, Bishop Kim served as a U.S. chaplain’s interpreter during the Korean War. After completing a bachelor’s degree in theology in Seoul, he attended Methodist Theological School in Ohio, where he received a master of divinity. He went on to earn a doctor of ministry from Drew University in New Jersey.

Bishop Kim has written several books on evangelism and growth in the Korean Church.

Bishop Kim’s wife, Wha-Sei Kim, also is a seminary graduate. They have three adult children. Two, Eugene and Eusan, are appointed to United Methodist Churches.

A dinner for Bishop and Mrs. Kim will follow the service. For information on the dinner, call 588-8670.
