Historical society takes up abolition, Underground R.R.

The Mercer County Historical Society is holding its first Underground Railroad and Abolition Era discussion meeting on April 9.

Roland Barksdale-Hall, author of "People in Search of Opportunity: The African-American Experience in Mercer County, Pennsylvania," will moderate the first discussion.

The meeting is being held in the social hall of the Helen Black Miller Memorial Chapel. The doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the meeting and a dinner begins at 7 p.m.

Those planning to attend should call the historical society at 662-3490.

The historical society also is holding its monthly Civil War Roundtable Discussion on April 10. Lois Foss will discuss Dr. Mary Edward Walker, Clara Barton and other influential women of the Civil War era. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Both meetings are free and open to the public.
