A smoldering electrical fire leveled most of a Delaware Township home Sunday afternoon while the family was out of town.

Flames from the 3:48 p.m. blaze rekindled at about 7 a.m. today and firefighters returned to the home of Scott Weaver, 2099 Rutledge Road, said Transfer Fire Chief James Big gart.

Weaver, attendance officer at Reynolds Area School District, his wife and three children were visiting relatives in Clarion, said neighbor Patti Svarny, whose husband called 911.

A motorist spotted smoke rising from the hilltop house and pulled into the Svarnys’ driveway to alert them, she said.

Mrs. Svarny said the back of the house was already burned by the time anyone discovered the blaze. "By the time it was discovered, a lot of damage had been done."

Flames were going through the roof of the two-story house when the first firefighters arrived, Biggart said.

"We attempted to save what we could. We saved a few things in the garage," he said. However, most of the house and its contents were destroyed, he said.

Although firefighters couldn’t save much, the family beagles were outside and unharmed, Mrs. Svarny said.

Mrs. Svarny said the family is staying at Cianci’s Motor Lodge in Hempfield Township. The Weavers were unavailable for comment this morning.

Biggart said a problem in an electrical outlet on a screened-in back porch sparked the $350,000 blaze.

Greenville, West Salem Township, Hempfield Township, Fredonia, Jefferson Township, Clark and Hermitage firefighters assisted Transfer volunteers. They were there about five hours Sunday.
