Pastor Chung to be associate

Pastor Sung Shik Chung will be installed as associate pastor of Mercer United Methodist Church, 250 E. Butler St. at 10 a.m. Sunday.

He will assist Pastor David M. Davis and visitation pastor Hugh D. Crocker. Pastor Chung will focus on children, youth, young adult and small groups ministries.

A reception in Mercer United Methodist’s fellowship hall will follow the installation service.

Pastor Chung earned a bachelor’s degree in theology in 1997 from Hyupsung University in Kyunggi, Korea; and a master of divinity last month from St. Paul School of Theology, Kansas City, Mo.

He came to the United States with an interest in the Methodist Church’s early beginnings.

While at St. Paul School of Theology, Pastor Chung served as an intern from 2000 to 2001 at Old Mission United Methodist Church, Fairway, Kan. From 1997 to 2000, he was worship leader at Central Korean United Methodist Church, Overland Park, Kan.

Pastor Chung was active in young adult ministry for Seoul (Korea) Methodist Conference and also was director of youth ministry in the Chungdong First Methodist Church in Seoul. From 1990 to 1992, he was a chaplain’s assistant in the Korean Army.

He has been involved in mission trips to the Philippines, Thailand and Russia.

In June 2000, Pastor Chung married Ji Hye Kim of Seoul. They are expecting their first child in July.
