YOUNGSTOWN

Shooting of Sharon native still unsolved

The March shooting death of a former Mercer County man in Youngstown remains an open case since police say they are having little luck in finding the shooter.

Thomas Edwin Hawk, formerly of Sharon and South Pymatuning Township, was shot at about 6 p.m. March 8 while standing at a pay telephone outside J&D Super Market in the 700 block of Belmont Avenue, police said.

The 65-year-old retired Youngstown construction worker died about 5 1/2 hours later from a single gunshot to the back of the head.

Hawk had just called his son, Brian, of Sharon, but the call was disconnected before the son could pick up the telephone.

Although Belmont is a heavy traffic area at that time of day -- near St. Elizabeth Health Center, where Hawk died, and Youngstown State University -- police have not identified any witnesses, said Sgt. Rod Rodway.

Police used the case in Crime Stoppers, where a reward is issued for help in solving a case, and interviewed people who live in the area.

"No one has come forward to help us," Rodway said. "This is one of those tough cases -- no witnesses."
