Today's obituaries Bernice E. McCartney Morell
MORELL Bernice E. McCartney, 80, of 319 Randolph St., Meadville, formerly of Fairview Township. Calling hours: 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today (7-13-01) in ROBERT L. SNYDER FUNERAL HOME Ltd., 3223 Perry Highway, Sheakleyville. Service: Funeral and committal service at 11 a.m. Saturday (7-14-01) in the funeral home, with the Rev. Jay Sterling, pastor of Clarks Mills United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial: Private, to be held Saturday.
Harold A. Nelson Retired tax collector, postal worker was veteran, writer A funeral service will be held Saturday for Harold A. Nelson, 630 N. Keel Ridge Road in Hermitage. He died unexpectedly at 9:50 p.m. Wednesday (7-11-01) in his home of natural causes. He was 71. Mr. Nelson was born Nov. 11, 1929, in Pittsburgh to Harold A. and Margaret Jane Boden Nelson. A 1947 alumnus of Penn Hills High School in Pittsburgh, he attended the University of Pittsburgh for four years, where he studied law. Mr. Nelson retired in 1986 as a tax collector from the U.S. Treasury Department in Pittsburgh, where he worked for 25 years. He previously had been employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Pittsburgh. Following retirement, Mr. Nelson was a security guard for Kilgore Detective Agency in Hermitage. A U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Korean conflict stationed in France. Mr. Nelson enjoyed photography, reading, writing, gardening and listening to classical music. He was working on a novel and earlier had published a book of poems, "Consider Some Reflections on Life." Mr. Nelson was a Protestant and a member of the Christian Writers Group in Mercer. Surviving are: his wife, the former Mary Catherine Coyne, whom he married Oct. 8, 1966, at home; a daughter, Ann Christine Montgomery and her husband, Donald E. of Clarion, Pa.; a son, Harold Casey Nelson and his friend, Justin Renquist, San Francisco; a brother, David E. Nelson, Sharon; and two grandchildren, Ashley and Donovan Montgomery, both Clarion. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial contributions may be made to the Organ Restoration Fund of St. Joseph's Church, 79 Case Ave., Sharon, 16146; or American Heart Association, 3168 E. State St., Hermitage, 16148.
NELSON William 'Bill' McGrath Jr. Sharon native active in St. Augustine, Fla. community ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- William "Bill" McGrath Jr., a 50-year resident of St. Augustine, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, in his home. He was 74. Mr. McGrath was born May 30, 1927, in Sharon to William J. McGrath Sr. and Theresa Dolan McGrath. He was married for 50 years to the late Betty Zim McGrath of St. Augustine, who died on Nov. 26, 2000. Mr. McGrath was originally from Sharon and moved to St. Augustine after his marriage. He had worked for Kelly George Co.; and the Garcia Funeral Home, both St. Augustine. For many years, Mr. McGrath owned and operated Standard Printing Co. in St. Augustine. He was a member of the St. Augustine Rotary Club; Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 829, St. Augustine; St. John's County Blood Bank; and St. John's Welfare Federation, both in Florida, just to name a few. He was also a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in St. Augustine since its beginning. He is survived by his two daughters, Kathy Harding, Orlando, Fla.; and Elizabeth McGrath, Maryville, Mo.; and one sister, Mrs. Ronald (Peggy) Green, Hermitage. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Sister Marie Patrice, Order of St. Benedict of Erie. Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Building Fund of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Box 364; or to the Elks Mobile Therapy Program in care of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 829, Box 238, both St. Augustine, Fla. 32085. McGRATH Verna Viola Laird Great-great-grandmother was Sharon homemaker Verna Viola Laird, Sharon, died at 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2001, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a short illness. She was 89. Mrs. Laird was born Feb. 3, 1912, in Lackawannock Township to Alex and Maude Caldwell Cameron. A homemaker, she married Leonard Laird on Dec. 3, 1929. He died Sept. 27, 1995. Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. John (Florence) Scopack, Mercer; four sons, Raymond Laird, Hermitage; Richard and David Laird, both Sharon; and Walter Laird, Brookfield; a sister, Shirley Hedglin; a brother, Allen Cameron, Sandy Lake; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Leonard Laird Jr. and Russell Laird; a daughter, Norma Jean Mayerchak; five sisters, Thelma Pacifico, Hazel and Emma Polick, Jennie DeWicke and Mildred Cameron; a great-granddaughter, Christinia Laird; and a grandson, William Laird. LAIRD Rocco J. Baggiossi Rocco J. Baggiossi, 1701 Buckeye Drive, Sharpsville, died at 3 a.m. Thursday (7-12-01) in UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh, of natural causes. He was 48. Obituary information was incomplete.
