Man indicted in worker's comp case
A Hadley man has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on charges of making false statements to obtain worker's compensation benefits.
The 22-count indictment named John L. McDonald, 60, of 1120 Fredonia Road, as the sole defendant, U.S. Attorney Linda L. Kelly announced Thursday.
According to the indictment, McDonald, a letter carrier employed by the United States Postal Service, made false statements in an effort to obtain about $17,779 in worker's compensation benefits.
McDonald is still employed by the United States Postal Service in Greenville, a spokesman from the post office said.
The law provides for a maximum total sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $500,000, or both, said U.S. Attorney Tina M. Oberdorf, who presented the case to the grand jury.
The United States Postal Inspection Service and the Department of Labor conducted the investigation leading to the indictment.
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt.
