WHEATLAND

Council approves limit on junk cars

Wheatland council added more restrictions on junk vehicles when it adopted an ordinance amendment Wednesday.

Last month, council stated its intent to limit the number of abandoned, junked, unlicensed or uninspected motor vehicles to two on a property, unless they are in a garage.

The 1989 ordinance did not limit the number of vehicles.

The vehicles must be considered "repairable" and registered with the borough secretary. Only two permits will be issue to a person a year.

Once registered, the owner must have it repaired, licensed and inspected within 180 days.

Council added that registration applicants must appear in person at the borough office, own both the vehicles and the property on which the vehicles will be stored, and be the one who repairs it.

Councilwoman Nita Buczo cast the only dissenting vote, although she said she supported the concept of the amendment.

Ms. Buczo said council was presented with the amendment and not the entire ordinance with the amendment included. She said she found the amendment confusing and wanted it to be clear so that there would be no confusion in the future.
