GREENVILLE

Man runs from cops twice, charged with assault, escape

Rodney Hayes, 19, of 22 1/2 Canal St., Greenville, tried to outrun police twice Sunday, but was chased down and tackled both times, police said.

Hayes and a friend, 18-year-old Crystal Thomas of South Mercer Street, Greenville, were walking along Clarksville Street at 12:01 a.m. Sunday when police stopped them. Both Hayes and Ms. Thomas had been drinking, police said.

Hayes ran away when police tried to arrest him, police said. After an officer ran down Hayes and tackled him, Hayes bit the officer on the arm, police said. The bite did not break the skin, police said.

Police said Ms. Thomas interfered with the arrest and was cited for disorderly conduct and underage drinking, police said.

Hayes was arraigned Sunday by District Justice Henry J. Russo, Hermitage, on charges of public drunkenness, underage drinking, aggravated assault on a police officer, simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct and placed on $5,000 bond.

After his arraignment, Hayes attempted to run away again and was tackled outside the district court. He was arraigned Tuesday on the escape charge by District Justice William L. Fagley, Greenville, who set bond on the charge at $5,000. Hayes was in Mercer County Jail this morning.
