77-year-old scammed, police say

The Associated Press

Police are looking for a man who impersonated a policeman and convinced a 77-year-old woman to withdraw cash from her bank account.

The woman told police she was contacted by phone and asked if she would look at pictures of suspects believed to have forged her checks.

A man arrived a short time later, saying he needed to check the serial numbers of her money, the woman told police. She told police the man had a police badge.

He asked the victim to go to her bank and withdraw money using one of her checks, police said.

He said he could not come inside because he was going to arrest bank employees and did not want to be noticed, police said.

The woman told police she wanted to help the supposed officer, so she withdrew some money and gave it to him outside the bank.

The man then fled in a car.
