SHARON

Hammered suspect in local jail now

The accused burglar who was hit in the head with a hammer is back in Mercer County after spending time in an Ohio hospital and jail.

Gary E. Morton, 28, of 619 McClure Ave., Sharon, was arrested at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday at the Sharon police station on charges of burglary, criminal trespass, loitering and prowling at night and criminal mischief, police said.

Morton spent several days in St. Elizabeth's Health Center in Youngstown after he was hit in the head with a hammer while breaking into Mike's Corner Market, 383 N. Oakland Ave., Sharon, police said. Morton then went to Mahoning County Jail and waived extradition to Mercer County, police said.

Morton was arraigned before District Justice James E. McMahon, Sharon, and was taken to Mercer County Jail after failing to post $25,000 bond.

The owner of the store, Dominic Cinicola, also lives in the building and heard a noise, police said. Cinicola hit Morton in the head, and Morton ran from the store, police said.
