CRAWFORD COUNTY
'Severe drought' label given to area
MEADVILLE (AP) -- Crawford County has been classified as a "severe drought" area by the National Weather Service.
The weather service has recorded only 2.1 inches of rain in August.
"We're, on average, getting only half of what we've enjoyed the last couple of years," said Joel Hunter of the Crawford County Extension Office.
Hunter said damage to the region's corn crops has been significant.
Dry conditions and resulting damage to corn and hay crops is adversely affecting the region's feed industry, Hunter said.
There are 23 Pennsylvania counties that remain under a drought watch.
Bedford County officials report that wells are low and significant water restrictions may soon be enacted in Bedford Borough.
