HERMITAGE

Beer-bottle assault case headed to court

A Hermitage man who allegedly cut two men with a broken beer bottle after they spotted him stealing picnic food remains in Mercer County Jail after his preliminary hearing.

Alexander Yankevich, 44, of 301 Kossuth St., was charged with attempted murder, aggravated and simple assault and reckless endangerment.

All charges were held for court Wednesday by District Justice Henry J. Russo, Hermitage.

Yankevich was taken to Mercer County Jail after failing to post $75,000 bond.

People eating and drinking Sept. 15 at the Fraternal Order of Police picnic area on North Water Avenue said Yankevich walked past and they asked him to join them at their company picnic, police said.

Some picnic-goers told police they invited Yankevich to the picnic because he looked unkempt and seemed like he could use the free meal and drinks.

When the picnic was wrapping up shortly before 9 p.m., two men at the picnic saw Yankevich arranging a to-go order of picnic food for himself, police said.

When they asked Yankevich to put the food down, he broke a beer bottle and used it as a weapon against Issac Friday, 46, of 817 New Castle Ave., Sharon, and Donald Shurbutt, 38, of 145 First Ave., Sharon, police said.

The men were treated at a local hospital, police said.
