Reynolds Elementary students Thursday had guests over for lunch.
Instead of dining just with their classmates, students' grandparents joined them.
"It's nice," said Edna Riffe of Transfer as she and her husband, Carroll, ate with fourth-grader Ethan Patterson. "I'm glad we live close by, so we get to come to it," she said, pronouncing the meal "very good." Thursday's menu included a choice of salisbury steak or stuffed crust pizza.
Carol Raynes had lunch with fourth-grader Camille Parker. "I think it's good. They do a good job," she said. "It's a nice thing they do. It's a lot of work."
Brandon Huffman sat with Wayne and Altamae Huffman. The fourth-grader topped off his meal with an ice cream bar. The Huffmans said they had already been to open house this year and were glad to have another opportunity to visit with their grandson at school.
Kindergarten through fourth-grade students ate with their grandparents this week. Next week, the fifth- and sixth-graders have their turn.
The lunches were part of Grandparents Week at the elementary school and were coordinated by the Reynolds Elementary Nutrition Advisory Council, which is made up of 18 students from fourth to sixth grade.
Karen Sherwood, administrative assistant and adviser to the Nutrition Advisory Council, said the students planned the menu, made posters, signed the invitations and served as greeters.
The council works on various food-service projects throughout the year. The current project is collecting canned goods for World Food Day on Oct. 17. In the spring, the council will coordinate a recognition for food service employees.
This is the second year for the grandparents lunch. Mrs. Sherwood said the activity had a "really good response" this year, with 85 grandparents lunching with the kindergarten class on Monday and 120 grandparents joining their first-grade grandchildren on Tuesday.
Some grandparents came several days in row to eat with their grandchildren in different grades.
"The kids really enjoy this, and the grandparents do too," Mrs. Sherwood said.
