Levy nixed to upgrade, secure schools
A 1-mill continuous-improvement levy for technology and security in Brookfield schools failed by almost 400 votes, perhaps a backlash to a zoning resolution that also was on Tuesday's ballot.
"I'm very disappointed," said Joanne Sydlowski, who was re-elected Tuesday to her fourth term on the school board. "That's what we were worried about: the levy being affected negatively by the zoning vote."
It lost by about 55 percent; 1,777 to 1,401.
The levy was to have paid for upgrading computers, software and the data network; wiring all three schools to make them Internet accessible; and for monitors and buzzer entrance systems in the elementary schools.
"All they did was hurt the kids," Mrs. Sydlowski said of voters.
