MERCER

Three keep council seats

Republicans Suzanne Carter Barner and John J. Zohoranacky and Democrat Ted Isoldi captured three, four-year seats on Mercer council.

Democrats Frank E. Reeher and Donald E. Redmond Sr. came up short in the council race. The winners are all incumbents.

Two, two-year seats on council were also up for grabs.

Republican Mayor John G. "Jerry" Johnson, who didn't seek re-election, won one of the seats. Voters chose Jack Hausser to fill the other. Incumbent Councilman Jeff Swartzbeck, a Democrat, lost the three-way race.

In the race for tax collector, Dorothy B. McElrath defeated Republican challenger Midge Gawne Zohoranacky.

Though the mayor's race was decided in the primary, Mercer voters made it official Tuesday. Nineteen-year-old Chris Portman, a Republican, was elected. Portman was a senior at Mercer Area High School when he began his quest for the borough's highest office. He'll serve Mercer while commuting to Clarion University of Pennsylvania.
