Mercer County Common Pleas Court judges began interviewing candidates Wednesday for an open seat on the county Board of Commissioners.

Judges planned to interview the 42 candidates Wednesday and this afternoon and announce their selection Friday.

The Mercer County Republican Committee planned to make its recommendations to the judges today. Committee members, who received 35 applications, created a short list of three candidates at a meeting Wednesday night.

While party Chairman David O. King wouldn't confirm who was on that short list, reports indicate they are: Roy C. Kingery of New Wilmington, Catherine V. Mott of Mercer and Joseph N. Phillips Jr. of Mercer.

Judges do not have to pick a replacement from the party's short list and can choose from any of the 42 people who applied.

Whoever they choose will serve the remaining two years and two months of former Commissioner Brian W. Shipley's term. The job pays $46,000 a year.

Shipley, 30, who resigned last week, has been mired in one controversy after another since early August.

Thee controversies surrounding him include his admitted personal use of a county business credit card, county computer and county cellular phone; a continuing civil lawsuit over the credit card records; a fiscal office file for the credit cards which was found after a day's search in a different, unmarked folder wedged between filing cabinets in the fiscal office and containing no records from last summer; and possible violations by his political committee.

Shipley has been the focal point of a state Attorney General's Office investigation since late August.
