FARRELL

Third time proves no charm for Norris

A Farrell man who has spent the last month in and out of police stations, jails and courtrooms was taken back to Mercer County Jail after an assault case was held for court.

Charles D. Norris, 28, of 208 1/2 Roemer Blvd., faced his third preliminary hearing in three weeks Friday.

According to the victim, a snicker sent Norris into a rage that resulted in him hitting her over the left eye with a drinking glass, breaking the glass, hitting her in the forehead with the broken glass and then punching her in the face.

Rhanada McHenry, 21, of 477 Silver St., said she first encountered Norris, an "associate" of her boyfriend, at about 11:30 p.m. Dec. 18 at Roamer's Bar, 204 Roemer Blvd., Farrell.

Norris asked her if she knew where her boyfriend was, Ms. McHenry told Assistant District Attorney William Moder.

Ms. McHenry said she didn't know where her boyfriend was and told Norris so, but pointed out that her boyfriend's vehicle was parked nearby.

"He said someone else was using my boyfriend's vehicle," she told Assistant Public Defender Dan Davis. "I said, 'Who?' He said, 'I can't tell you that.' "

The two parted. Ms. McHenry said she had not had any previous bad experiences with Norris and passed off that one as inconsequential.

Ms. McHenry eventually left Roamer's with some companions for another bar. After deciding that nothing was happening at the other bar, they walked back to Roamer's at about 1 a.m.

Norris, who lives in the Roamer's Hotel upstairs from the bar, was standing by the door.

"I didn't say anything, just snickered, because he had lied about where my boyfriend was at," Ms. McHenry told Moder.

She saw her boyfriend driving by as she walked back to Roamer's, and her boyfriend said he had not seen Norris that night, she testified.

For Davis, she said, "I wasn't snickering at him. It wasn't, in reality, even a snicker. I guess he assumed I was laughing at him because he lied about where my boyfriend was at."

"I walked past him," said the housekeeper for a local nursing home. "He was staring at me like he wanted to kill me."

Norris "snapped out," Ms. McHenry said. He got in her face, threatened her and pushed her to the floor, she said. Although some people got between them as she got up, Norris was able to hit her.

"I really didn't know what hit me," she said. "I didn't realize he hit me with a glass until I was walking away and everybody was looking at me."

Ms. McHenry said she did not seek medical treatment -- "I'm very afraid of needles," she said -- but the wound bled profusely and she missed two days of work with an eye that was swollen shut for two days.

District Justice Henry J. Russo, Hermitage, held for court charges of aggravated and simple assault and terroristic threats.

District Justice James E. McMahon, Sharon, had previously held for court charges in the other two cases.

Sharon police charged Norris with aggravated and simple assault and harassment for repeatedly punching Anita Leonard, 22, of 820 Ravine Place, Sharon, Dec. 14 in the area near her home.

Sharon police added charges of intimidating a witness and harassment and stalking, accusing Norris of parking outside Ms. Leonard's home and playing songs of violent content. He also circled her house, police said.

Norris was taken to Mercer County Jail after failing to post $25,000 bond. The other two cases also are holding him with another $10,000 bond.
