Today's obituaries William Oliver Shaw Former New Castle business owner had sister living here William Oliver Shaw, 9427 Green Needle Drive, New Port Richey, Fla., formerly of New Castle, died at 11:29 a.m. Wednesday (1-2-02) in Community Hospital, New Port Richey, Fla. He was 75. He was born Oct. 31, 1926, in New Castle to William O. and Lila Williams Shaw. Mr. Shaw served in the Navy during World War II. He was the owner of Valley Auto Spring Co., New Castle. Mr. Shaw was a member of the First United Methodist Church, New Castle. He also belonged to Timber Greens Country Club; and the 32nd Degree Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 642, New Castle. He enjoyed golf and traveling. His wife, Jean Kelly Shaw, preceded him in death May 18, 1998. Surviving are: two daughters, Linda Thornton, New Port Richey, Fla.; and Joan Gruitza, Hermitage; one son, Thomas Shaw, Marietta, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

NORTH Verla Mae Strobl Former Sharon resident attended First Presbyterian Verla Mae Strobl, Woodland Place Inc., Coolspring Township, formerly of Sharon, died at 5:30 a.m. Friday (1-4-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 78. Mrs. Strobl was born Oct. 27, 1923, in Sharon to Walter L. and Cora Swartz Grimm. She attended First Presbyterian Church, Sharon. Her husbands, Frank L. Strobl and Lawrence Brest, both preceded her in death. Surviving are: two brothers, Jack Grimm, Sharon; and Walter Grimm, Hermitage. Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Brest.
STROBL Herman Hugo Hanson Retired president of Gilbert's Insurance was WWII vet, civic leader Herman Hugo Hanson of St. Paul's Home, West Salem Township, formerly of Highland Road, Sharon, passed away at 10:10 a.m. Friday (1-4-02) in his residence in West Salem Township. He was 84. He was born Oct. 22, 1917, in Boston to Herman and Lillian Burton Hanson. Mr. Hanson was a 1939 alumnus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass., where he received his bachelor of science degree in engineering and business administration. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. In November 1944, he was stationed in Sharon at the former transformer division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he designed and built torpedoes. Testing of the torpedoes was conducted at the Pymatuning Reservoir, Crawford County. He also was stationed in Washington, D.C., for a period of time and was released from active duty in 1946. Mr. Hanson joined Gilbert's Insurance Agency, Sharon, in 1948 as vice president and general manager. He retired as president in December 1982 after 34 years of service. He received his Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter certification in 1959 and was a member and president of the Mahoning-Shenango Valley Chapter CPCU Association. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Sharon. A former F.H. Buhl trustee, Mr. Hanson was appointed secretary-treasurer of the trustees in 1967, a position he held until October 1992. He was also a director and treasurer of the Buhl Club. A longtime director of the former McDowell National Bank, he was a member of the board of directors for the Shenango Valley Industrial Development Corp., the Shenango Inn, Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce, Mercer County Crippled Children's Society, Mercer County Association for the Retarded, and the Merchants and Manufacturer's National Bank. He was chairman for the United Fund of the Shenango Valley and served on the Community Chest campaign. He was a member of the American Red Cross and the board of directors of what was Sharon General Hospital. He was also a member and past president of Sharon Country Club. Mr. Hanson was a member of Sharon Kiwanis Club; the Sharon Social Fishing Club at Lake Muskoka, Canada; the Century Club at Pymatuning Lake; and the Sharon University Club. A renowned sailor, he began sailing at 10 years of age on Nantucket Island, Mass., where he raced and taught sailing at Nantucket Yacht Club. He raced M.I.T. sailing dinghies during his collegiate years. Later, at the Pymatuning Yacht Club, he won six Thistle Class championships. He also participated in the Mackinac Races, the Bermuda Race in 1956, and Southern Circuit races including the Lipton Cup and Governor's Cup. He sailed in many races on the Great Lakes as first mate for Capt. S.K. Wellman, Cleveland, aboard the 40-foot yawl "Indigo." He won national championships in the Amphibian Class aboard his own boat, "Luffare," in 1959, 1960 and 1962. He received more than 300 trophies and was inducted into the Intercollegiate Sailing Hall of Fame, Annapolis, Md. In addition to competitive racing, he and his wife Mary and his children enjoyed cruising aboard "Luffare" for many years. In addition to sailing, Mr. Hanson enjoyed traveling and fishing off the Florida Keys at Islamorada, where he and his wife spent the winters for more than 20 years. Mr. Hanson met his wife, the former Mary Isabel Gilbert, when he was stationed in Sharon. They married Feb. 23, 1946 in First Presbyterian Church, Sharon. Mrs. Hanson died March 2, 1999. Surviving are: two daughters, Dr. Holly H. Johnston, Eastham, Mass.; Mary "Mitzi" Kuster and her husband, Attorney Thomas W. Kuster, Hermitage; six grandchildren, Casey Pettitt Johnston, Gregory Warren Johnston, Jennifer Blythe Johnston, Brian Hugh Kuster, Andrew Thomas Kuster and Abbey Leigh Kuster; three great-granddaughters, Porter Elizabeth Kaboly, Sydney Pettitt Kaboly and Brittany Amber Johnston. HANSON Alice M. Anderson Homestead native was clerk for Murphy's store in Sharon Alice M. Anderson, Nugent Convalescent Home, 500 Clarksville Road, Hermitage, formerly of Mertz Towers, Sharpsville, died at 10 p.m. Jan. 3, 2002, in the convalescent home after an extended illness. She was 85. Mrs. Anderson was born June 3, 1916, in Homestead, Pa., to John and Catherine Balog Danilovics. She attended school in Pittsburgh. Mrs. Anderson was a clerk for Murphy's 5 and 10 Cent Store, Sharon. She also was employed by Kresky's Department Store and the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. She attended St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, Hermitage; and was a member of the Elks Club. Her husband, Clyde Anderson, whom she married in 1980, died in 1989. Her first husband, Joseph Kundla, whom she married in 1938, died in 1967. Surviving are: a brother, William Danilovics and his wife, Wanda, Hermitage; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Margaret Troncone; and two brothers, John and George Danilovics. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael's Cemetery Fund.
ANDERSON Roxaine Mayme-Margaret Thompson Roxaine Mayme-Margaret Thompson, 6842 Linden Drive, Penn View Allotment, Andover, formerly of Aliquippa, died early Friday morning (1-4-02) in Athens (Ga.) Regional Medical Center. She was 75. Obituary information was incomplete.
