Feeding waterfowl banned in park

In an attempt to reduce the number of Canada geese and ducks at Buhl Farm park, trustees adopted a policy preventing people from feeding wildlife at the park and golf course, according to General Manager Pat O'Mahony.

The policy takes effect Jan. 15. Park rangers will strictly enforce the policy, O'Mahony said.

At the first violation, a warning will be issued, then after that, violators will be asked to leave the park indefinitely, he said.

"This non-feeding policy affects all areas of the park and golf course. This was necessary because of the unnatural concentration of waterfowl around Lake Julia," O'Mahony said.

"Unnatural concentrations of wildlife breed disease and make the wildlife dependent on people for food instead of relying in their own natural feeding ability," O'Mahony said.

O'Mahony added that there have been many complaints about waterfowl droppings.
