GREENE TOWNSHIP

Wood-burner sparked fire; quick action saved garage

A quick response by firefighters prevented a fire from destroying a Greene Township garage at 12:24 p.m. Saturday.

A wood-burner sparked the fire in the rear of a garage behind the home of John Knauff, 74 Mud College Road, said Jamestown firefighter James E. Brown. Knauff used the garage as a wood shop, he added.

A Jamestown firefighter spotted heavy yellow smoke coming from the garage, which was 6 feet from the house, Brown said.

Thanks to a Greenville fire truck that arrive first on the scene, firefighters saved most of the garage, Brown said.

The fire burned through a back wall and part of the roof, but spared most of the garage, he said. The loss was estimated at $25,000, but firefighters saved about $30,000 of the garage and its contents, Brown said.

About 30 firefighters from Jamestown, Greenville, West Salem Township, Hempfield Township and Hartstown responded.
