Ryan sworn in as mayor; Price leaves job he held for 24 years

It was standing room only Monday night in the Sharon City Building as residents gathered to bid one mayor farewell and wish another good luck.

The city's first new mayor in 24 years, David O. Ryan, was sworn in by District Justice James E. McMahon at a ceremony.

Local clergy offered prayers of guidance and inspiration as Ryan prepared to take his seat as head of the city.

Outgoing Mayor Robert T. Price thanked residents for their support over the years and wished his successor well.

Ryan said he realizes the city is losing much experience with Price's departure but vowed to work hard, be honest and do the best job he can for the city.

Price decided not to run in the November election, citing health reasons and a desire to spend more time with his family.

Ryan said he always knew Price was a popular mayor but never realized how popular until he campaigned door-to-door and many told him they would have voted for Price if he had run.

Also sworn in at the ceremony were Councilman George Gulla and new Police Chief Thomas Burke.

Earlier in the day, Councilman Fred Hoffman and new city controller Nick Morocco were sworn into office.

Later, council re-elected Hoffman as president and named Chris Outrakis vice-president.

In 2002 council will meet at 6:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month except January, when they will meet on Jan. 24. Council will have an additional meeting at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 5.
