A Columbus, Ohio man who police said was beating a woman while driving a vehicle was stopped after a Sharon resident saw the alleged attack and helped police.

Tommie L. Buggs III, 31, was arrested at 3:57 a.m. Sunday at Plum Street and Sherman Avenue in Sharon on charges of aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, terroristic threats, unlawful restraint and carrying a firearm without a license, police said.

Buggs and a woman left a party in Farrell and were in Buggs' car when they began arguing, police said. The woman tried to get out of the car but Buggs locked her in and drove away, police said.

Police gave the following account:

Buggs began beating the woman about the face, head and neck while he was driving. He also threatened to shoot the woman. While Buggs didn't have a gun in his hand, the woman knew there was a gun in his car.

Eventually Buggs stopped his car in the 800 block of Spruce Avenue to continue beating the woman. A resident saw the pair and called 911. When Buggs drove away, the resident got in his car and followed Buggs while he gave street directions to police.

When police stopped Buggs' car they said they found a 9mm pistol. The woman, though beaten up, was not taken to the hospital, police said.

Buggs was arraigned before District Justice James E. McMahon, Sharon, and was released on a $15,000 unsecured bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 3 p.m. Jan. 22.
