Westminster College marks sesquicentennial

Anniversary year is packed with activities

Westminster College, New Wilmington, has big plans to celebrate its sesquicentennial in coming months.

The college was founded 150 years ago on Jan. 21, 1852, during a joint meeting of the Ohio and Shenango Presbyteries.

The following events are planned Monday for Founder's Day:

  • Birthday cake celebration -- 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium. W. Paul Gamble, a 1932 Westminster alumnus will sign his book, "The Westminster Story, 1852-2002: Glorious, Grand and True;" J.G. McGill, a 1968 alumnus, will sign his print, "Glorious, Grand and True, 150 Years."

  • Martin Luther King Day chapel service -- 4 p.m. in Wallace Memorial Chapel on campus, with Rev. Steve Allen; Diversity Coordinator Jeannette Hooks; and College President R. Thomas Williamson;

  • Student and staff sesquicentennial kick-off celebration -- 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium on campus, with Tom Deluca, hypnotist. Free sesquicentennial buttons, snow globes and antique photos will be part of the event.

  • Fireworks -- 8:30 p.m. over Lake Brittain.

    The following events also have been scheduled:

  • The first in a 12-part series of "history pieces" from Dr. Eugene Sharkey -- Jan. 24.

  • 1962 championship reunion dinner -- 5 p.m. Jan. 26 in Russell Hall, followed by half-time recognition at the Westminster versus Grove City College basketball game.

  • Biology Department sesquicentennial seminar series -- 7 p.m. Jan. 29, with Dr. Clarence Harms speaking on "150 Years of Biology at Westminster College."

  • Mardi Gras Celebration -- 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 1 in Orr Auditorium's lobby, with free mask decorating, carnival booths and prizes followed by fireworks.

  • "Red Wanting Blue" concert -- 8:30 p.m. Feb. 1 in Orr Auditorium.

  • Allies Program -- Feb. 2 in Orr Auditorium, with Judy Shepherd as featured speaker.

  • "Gospitality" -- 7 p.m. Feb. 15 in Orr Auditorium.

  • Board of trustees meeting with dinner and program, "First 150 years" -- Feb. 15 and 16.

  • Last Lecture Series -- 4 p.m. Feb. 20 in the Down Under in the basement of Eichenauer Hall. Dr. Walter E. Scheid, speech professor emeritus, will speak.

  • Biology Department Sesquicentennial Seminar Series -- 7 p.m. Feb. 21 in Phillips Lecture Hall. Dr. Joseph M. Balzon will discuss "150 Years of Evolution."

  • 55th Annual Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Honors Band -- March 1 through 3.

  • Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Honors Band concert -- 2 p.m. March 3 in Orr Auditorium. Eugene Corporon, North Texas State University's wind studies director, will conduct the 120 musicians.

  • "Westminster's 150th on the Road" -- March 9 in Baltimore; March 10 in Washington, D.C.; March 12 in Philadelphia; and March 13 in Harrisburg.

  • Scholarship dinner -- March 20.

  • Last Lecture Series -- 4 p.m. March 20 in the Down Under. Marjorie A. Walker, physical education professor emerita, will speak.

  • Biology Department sesquicentennial seminar series -- 7 p.m. March 21, with Joshua C. Corrett-Bennett speaking on "Science and Religion."

  • "Westminster's 150th on the Road" -- April 5 in Lawrence and Mercer counties; and April 6 in Pittsburgh.

  • Women of Westminster seminar -- April 13 in Russell Dining Hall, on campus.

  • Last Lecture Series -- 4 p.m. April 17 in the Down Under. Dr. Joseph M. Hopkins, professor of religion emeritus, will speak.

  • Westminster College Institute Day -- April 19.

  • Lil' Sibs Weekend -- April 19 and 20.

  • Relay for Life and Habitat for Humanity "Buildfest" -- both April 20

  • Henderson Lecture -- 7 p.m. April 24 in Beeghly Theater, on campus, with Dr. Nancy Macky and Jon Stallworthy.

  • Lecture -- 7 p.m. April 25 in Phillips Lecture Hall, Wallace Memorial Chapel. Jon Howie Stallworthy, scholar, critic and poet will speak.

  • Biology Department sesquicentennial seminar series -- 7 p.m. April 25, with Joshua C. Corrett-Bennett speaking on "Hagfish."

  • Spring honors convocation -- 11 a.m. April 27 in Orr Auditorium.

  • Employee recognition luncheon -- May 8.

  • Friends of the Library Spring Event -- May 15.

  • Senior class gift lunch -- May 17, with Board of Trustees.

  • Board of Trustees Meetings -- 7 p.m. May 17, with dinner program, "Second 50 Years."

  • Baccalaureate -- 10:30 a.m. May 17

  • Commencement -- 2:30 p.m. May 17.
