Alex Sherry 'Alick Shira'
Retired tool, die maker had daughter living in Grove City

WHITE OAK, Pa. -- Alex Sherry "Alick Shira," 84, of White Oak, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, in Monsour Medical Center in Jeannette.

Born May 5, 1917, in McKeesport, he was a son of the late John and Anastasia Souanka Sherry; father of the late William B. Sherry; and brother of the late Walter, Michael, Steve and Eva Sherry. He also was predeceased by two grandchildren.

He was a retired tool and die maker for Teledyne Firth Sterling, McKeesport; a member of U.S. Steelworkers Local Union; and was a cook in the CC NF-I, Camp Roosevelt in Edinburg, Va.

He is survived by his wife, Blanche Markley Sherry; a son, Ira A. Sherry, McDonald, Pa.; a daughter, June Dunn, Grove City; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Andrew Sherry, Rio Rancho, N.M.; a sister, Mary Wolf, North Versailles, Pa.; and nieces and nephews.

Harvey Leon Dawson

Retired Sharon teacher, game announcer was active in Elks

A funeral service will be held Wednesday (1-16-02) for Harvey Leon Dawson of 1826 Powers Ave., Sharpsville. He passed away at 2:44 a.m. Sunday (1-13-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 71.

Mr. Dawson was born Jan. 10, 1931, in Farrell, a son of the late James Harvey and Celina Yvonne DeBrakeleer Dawson.

Mr. Dawson was a 1948 alumnus of Farrell High School, where he was a member of the marching band. A 1953 graduate of Grove City College, he received a bachelor of arts degree in education and retired in the 1980s from Sharon School District where he was a special education teacher for more than 27 years.

An avid sports fan, he was the voice of the Sharon High School Tigers, announcing home games for many years. He also was a member of the lines crew at the games.

He was a basketball season ticket holder at Sharon High School and Farrell High School and was a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Pirates fan.

Mr. Dawson was a life member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Sharon Lodge 103, where he was the exulted ruler in 1974. He served as secretary for many years and was on a number of committees. He was also a member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows Sharon Lodge 347.

He was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church, Hermitage; and Sharpsville Baptist Church. He enjoyed traveling, particularly to California, Nevada and other western states. He had a lifelong love of science fiction and was a movie buff.

Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Nancy Ann) Brown, Pittsburgh; two sons, Lee Daniel Dawson and his wife Stephanie, Windsor, Ontario, Canada; and Pete Michael Dawson and his wife Jamie, Tampa, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Stephanie, Amanda, Melissa, Janine, Matthew, Joshua and Savannah; and three nieces, Debra Bobish, Wendy Chapin and Kelly Guido.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Yvonne McDonald Tessmer, who died in October 2001.

Memorial contributions may be made to Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Sharon Lodge 103, 260 E. Connelly Blvd., Sharon 16146.

Mrs. Earl Thelma S. Swartz

South Py woman was charter member of Brookfield church

A funeral service will be held Friday (1-18-02) for Mrs. Earl Thelma S. Swartz of 2876 Saranac Drive and formerly of Tamarack Drive, both in South Pymatuning Township. She passed away at 11:30 p.m. Sunday (1-13-02) in her home because she was ready to join her husband, Earl Lee Swartz, whom she lost last June. She was 89.

Mrs. Swartz was born Dec. 28, 1912, in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of James F. and Jessie Gibson Stoyer. She was a 1929 graduate of the former Transfer High School.

She was employed at the former Stafford's Cleaners in Sharpsville; and the former Peoples Cleaners of Sharon for many years.

She was a charter member of Living Word Church of Brookfield in Masury.

Mrs. Swartz was a former member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Hermitage, and still belonged to their friendship circle and Pollyanna Guild.

She also was a member of the South Pymatuning Ladies Club and the South Pymatuning Volunteer Fireman's Auxiliary.

Some of her hobbies included reading, sewing and crocheting.

Her husband of 72 years, Mr. Earl Lee Swartz, whom she married June 18, 1929, passed away on Tuesday, June 19, 2001.

She is survived by one daughter, Mr. Joseph (Martha L.) Simons, South Pymatuning Township; one son, Timothy Earl Swartz of Shiloh, Ohio; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. J. Wallis (Marian) Stoyer and Mrs. Joseph (Agnes) French, both of South Pymatuning Township; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, J. Wallis Stoyer; and Robert R.M. Stoyer.
