Fire unit issues report

The Greenville Fire Department saved property worth $692,000 from fire in 2001; $164,300 in property was damaged by fire.

A total of 592 alarms were answered. The majority of runs were fires or smoke in buildings with 17; vehicle fires, 11; medical emergency, 294; traffic accidents, 25; fire alarm activations, 92; hazardous material incidents, 15; and assists to other fire departments, 74.

Engine 96 had 270 responses; Engine 96-2, 85 responses; Ladder 96, 27 responses; and Squad 96, 225 responses.

Two firefighters were injured in the line of duty during the year and one required time off work.

Firefighters arrived at emergencies within an average of three minutes from time of dispatch.

The Fire Prevention Bureau conducted 381 fire inspections resulting in 97 code violation notices being issued. These violations were followed up with 185 re-inspections. Forty-seven occupancy permits were issued.

Twelve public fire education lectures were conducted and 18 fire station tours were given.

Firefighters changed batteries in 74 residents' smoke alarms.

Company training was held on 47 occasions and special training courses were attended on 18 occasions.

Firefighters used 103 man hours for maintaining and repairing department vehicles and equipment.

Major equipment purchases were a thermal imaging camera at $17,000 and two hydraulic rescue cutting and prying tools at $17,000. No local tax dollars were used to purchase these items -- all were purchased with state fire tax funds, grants and donations.
